Chairman and CEO
Robert Mariano became Chairman and CEO of Roundy’s Supermarkets, Inc. in June 2002. Since joining Roundy’s, Bob has redefined and elevated customer focus through a back-to-basics approach of “serving the customer one at a time” and building customer-centric employees. This approach has been critical to Roundy’s expansion success. Within Bob’s first 18 months as CEO, new store construction and six acquisitions doubled company owned and operated retail sites with the addition of 59 stores. Roundy’s home office was moved from the suburbs, consolidated with two remote office operations and relocated to a state-of-the-art facility in downtown Milwaukee. A 1.1 million square foot distribution center was constructed in Oconomowoc to meet the demands of our growth. Bob also established the Roundy’s Foundation in August 2003. Since its inception, the Foundation has given more than $3 million to organizations addressing hunger relief, families in crisis due to domestic abuse and the advancement of literacy. Major grant recipients include food banks and pantries, women and family violence shelters and literacy programs throughout Wisconsin and Minnesota.
Bob is a seasoned veteran of the food industry, with more than 30 years of experience. Before joining Roundy's, he spent the bulk of his career with the Chicago-based supermarket chain, Dominick's, working his way to the top until he served as president and chief executive officer from 1995 to 1998. He grew the company to a top performing regional supermarket chain with 115 stores. He was instrumental in taking Dominick's public in 1996 before selling the company to Safeway, Inc. in November 1998.
Bob began his career as a sales representative for Oscar Mayer & Company. He has an MBA from the University of Chicago and a Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Illinois, Chicago.
