Giant Creation Sent to Feed Children at Milwaukee Area Youth Agencies Milwaukee, October 3, 2005 – Today Robert Mariano, chairman and chief executive officer of Roundy’s Supermarkets, Inc., joined Milwaukee Bucks guard T.J. Ford and staff and volunteers from America’s Second Harvest of Wisconsin to unveil a giant peanut butter & jelly sandwich, which helped kick off the 2005 Peanut Butter & Jelly Challenge. The giant creation was made up of more than 760 individual peanut butter & jelly sandwiches. Students from Whitefish Bay Middle School were on hand to help eat some of the sandwiches. The remaining sandwiches were packaged and sent to several agencies in the Milwaukee metropolitan area including Hillside, Davis, and Mary Ryan Boys & Girls Clubs, Dr. Brenda Noach Choice School and Heartlove Place. Each of these agencies serves children in need. | |
The PB& J challenge is a food drive which supplies peanut butter and jelly to hungry children in the area. The drive encourages school children to donate jars of peanut butter and jelly to help their peers. Peanut butter and jelly are the two most requested food items at Second Harvest. Peanut butter is high in protein, a nutrient often lacking in the diets of more than 136,000 children who rely on Second Harvest for food. Students who donate a jar of peanut butter or jelly at their school in October will receive a free ticket to the Milwaukee Bucks game on November 8. The public is invited to join in on this campaign by donating peanut butter or jelly at participating Pick ’n Save stores in the barrels featuring T.J. Ford. There are 38 Pick ’n Save stores throughout the Milwaukee metropolitan area participating. The campaign runs throughout October.
At today’s kick-off, Milwaukee Bucks guard T.J. Ford talked to the students on hand and signed their t-shirts. Bucks mascot Bango also joined in on the fun. The Bucks Hoop Troop made balloon hats for the kids. Students and adults enjoyed eating peanut butter & jelly sandwiches and hearing about the 2005 PB& J Challenge.
