Pick 'n Save Helps America's Second Harvest Kick-Off the 6th Annual PB&J Challenge
Students at Lowell Elementary School Compete in Sandwich Showdown

Milwaukee, October 9, 2008 - The 6th annual Peanut Butter and Jelly Challenge is underway and Pick 'n Save is o nce again proud to be a part of it. The PB&J Challenge is a food drive that encourages elementary and middle school children to collect peanut butter and jelly to help feed hungry children through America's Second Harvest of Wisconsin. Throughout October, participating middle and elementary schools compete to see which school can collect the most peanut butter and jelly. The top collecting schools are eligible for prizes and will be honored at halftime of the Milwaukee Bucks game on November 8, 2008. The public can also join the food drive by dropping jars of peanut butter and jelly in barrels at participating Pick 'n Save stores. Just look for the PB&J Challenge sign featuring Bango, the Milwaukee Bucks' mascot.

Bango cheered on students at Lowell Elementary S chool as they officially kicked off this year's PB&J Challenge with a Sandwich Showdown Wednesday, October 8. Three student teams helped by local chefs put their culinary skills to the test to make an original peanut butter and jelly sandwich packed with secret ingredients of their choosing. Mike Stoner, owner of North Star American Bistro, led team #1, the Dolphins, to getting the Most Creative and Most Kid-Friendly sandwich awards of the morning. Marta Bianchini, owner of Osteria del Mondo, Cubanita's and Indulge, led team #2, the Goobers, to winning the Best Tasting and Best Presentation awards. Teresa Delaney, executive baker at the Metro Market, led team #3 to winning the Healthiest sandwich award. All the students were winners, as the showdown participants and audience members received a peanut butter and jelly sandwich with milk after the competition.

The PB&J Challenge benefits children served by America's Second Harvest of Wisconsin. It is sponsored by Pick 'n Save, the Milwaukee Bucks, Smucker's, Jif and Kemps. This year's media partner is Fox 6 Milwaukee.

PB&J Challenge 2008 Sandwich Showdown Recipes

1. Dolphins (Mike Stoner, North Star American Bistro)

Award: Most Creative & Most Kid Friendly

Spread crunchy peanut butter on wheat bread. Spread grape and strawberry jelly on the other piece of bread. Sprinkle with brown sugar. Add blueberries and marshmallows. Cut into the shape of a dolphin and add a chocolate chip for the eye and a celery stick for the blow hole.

2. Goober (Marta Bianchini, Osteria del Mondo)

Award: Best Tasting & Best Presentation

Spread peanut butter on first piece of bread. Add sliced bananas. On the second slice of bread, spread peanut butter on one side and grape jelly on the other side. Add sliced apples to the grape jelly and then another layer of grape jelly. Top with a slice of bread. Cut sandwich into triangles and drizzle with chocolate syrup and white chocolate chips. Serve with a side of cool whip for dipping.

3. Sticky (Teresa Delaney, Metro Market)

Award: Healthiest

Spread creamy peanut butter on honey oat bread. Add sliced bananas, sliced apples, dried cranberries, raisins and sunflower seeds.
